Chelating, the term specifically implies the process of formation of a special class of metal compounds, wherein, a single metal ion is bounded to another class of chemical agents known as ligands. Chelating, a process that strictly conforms to the realm of chemistry is essentially occurring around us perpetually. The compounds formed as a result of the process of chelation are called chelators. Chelation finds its application in the industry too. For instance, EDTA, a chelator is widely used in the industry.
As mentioned above, this process can be natural as well as artificial. Of all the types of chelation, natural chelation provides us with the foremost foundation of understanding of the process that is so boisterously revolutionalising the industry today and is embedding itself deeper and deeper into the roots of modern economy.
The process of chelation is responsible for the mobilization of metal in the soil as metal compounds in the soil react with the natural ligands from the atmosphere leading to the formation of chelants that are mobilized effectively by the water present in the soil. Although this process seems to be only beneficial to the human race, it has been modified into a problem by the unscrupulous avarice of human race that are manufacturing harmful chelants that are affecting the quality of life in general.
