It is an unfortunate fact that many people who constantly feel sad do it alone and never ask for the help they are entitled to from health care professionals. In addition to depression medications, a variety of treatments are also available that can ease this debilitating mental illness. Unlike many years ago when little was really understood about the subject; today depression can actually be cured although the treatment is often expensive although it does rely on an early assessment of the condition. Two main depression treatments stand out from the rest and are now used in many cases of depression providing an insight to the sufferer of the condition they have and they are interpersonal and cognitive behavioral therapy.
The road to recovery can actually be swift with many patients often in less than twenty weeks so the treatment is very successful. The diagnosis is all important and must be obtained from a doctor regarded highly in this field as the correct assessment as to the type of depression causing the problem, is paramount in a successful treatment. Your doctor will be able to recommend what type of treatment and depression medication required as they do differ considerably and no-one wants to make the situation worse. You would be amazed at the large number of medications now available to help with this condition.
The most popular anti-depressant medications include the newer selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and monoamine oxidase inhibitors but the older tricyclics are not generally used as much. Unfortunately the tricyclics have more side-effects so tend not to be prescribed with the same frequency as the newer types. Strangely, despite these side effects, the doctor may believe the patient will be better off taking a mixture of these drugs to help the condition. So the patient may find themselves on more than one type of medication to help alleviate the depression.
There may be a little trial an error while the doctor decides on the best dosage level for the patient. However, when it comes to taking these drugs, patients are highly advised to never mix up depression medications; as well as change which dosages to take without consulting their doctors first. The patient must also learn that sedatives and other anti-anxiety medications are not anti depression medicine and should not be used as substitutes. While they may be of help in combination with other anti-depressants medications, they are not designed for curing the condition.
Their purpose is to help calm the nerves, which is why depression medications are still required to be taken by the depression patient. Many people prescribed with tricyclic medication will experience some of the more common side-effects. Not everyone is affected in the same way and many are quite happy to put up with them and this is not normally a problem unless it affects the person’s ability to function normally. It is always advisable if you are having a reaction to any type of drug to inform your doctor immediately.
